Community PALS

What Is In It For Me?

People share the experience of learning together and mutually support one another as they learn; bonds are formed and friendships are made during the process.

The PALS approach focuses on what works within a community (its strengths) and encourages the community to focus on more of what it is that builds strength.

There is a sense of achievement, self-respect, mutual regard, momentum and achievement that comes from working through the programme with others.

The PALS (Pro-Active Life Skills) learning framework offers techniques and exercises that can be used in a wide range of formal and informal settings; with a wide range of individuals or groups.

The principles behind the framework are that the content of exercises is independent. Consequently, techniques can be used for many different life and work scenarios, the author's objectives being that all levels of learner and participant can be included without an organisational hierarchy; without politics impacting involvement and without skill, emotional or literacy level being something that inhibits involvement.

Development of unbiased facilitation techniques is necessary to fully achieve these objectives. As the intent is to actually make a real impact - tangible achievements in individual and community life - the authors use the term "Enablers". This term implies that there is a target and action will be taken - rather than simply facilitating a meeting or an event.

PALS Enablers training is intended to help potential users understand what is required and how to use the approaches before, during and after the event or application.

Summary of Programme

All PALS workshops are dependent on the content, life experience and contribution of the attendees; so it is difficult to prescribe the agenda. For this reason the PALS work using and outline framework, hence being able to adjust content during the sessions as content, priorities and participants motivations / requirements become more clear.

To uncover, reinforce and build on bonds, strengths and identity inherent in a community from shared experiences; developing, recording and distributing creative storyboards from workshops that incorporate artistic learning techniques; and by engaging local artists, actors and sculptors to act as facilitators.

To utilise the PALS person-centred facilitation methods within community groups to evaluate how they can strengthen attitudes, beliefs and culture.

To evaluate effective media / methods for communicating the themes, storyboards and development messages from the programme - and to gather feedback / opinion on the project outcomes.

To encourage community members to take ownership of shared goals for realistic family / personal development in life and work.

To enable communities to identify and fine-tune the framework methods in order to encourage engagement.
