Introduction
Do you want to share your strengths with a young person who needs support with getting ready for living in the adult world? The transition from childhood to adulthood is not an easy one. For some young people there are extra challenges which can make it hard to see how earning a wage and paying bills would ever be a possibility.
New Meaning Training delivers learning programmes that are designed to empower and support young people in everyday fundamentals for living life more independently. Tutors and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) support learners as they acquire skills for employment, training, life skills and personal development as well as English and Maths Functional Skills.
If you are a caring person who is interested in motivating, inspiring and building a rapport with young people, to help them with their life, work-skills and employability, then a LSA role at New Meaning Training (NMT) will be a job where you can get paid whilst making a difference! NMT is currently looking for LSAs with empathy, patience, and compassion to work with learners aged between 16-25.
Successful applicants will be supporting students with their learning and or social and emotional needs that match your skill set and personality. Our learner’s profiles vary greatly so we welcome a variety of applicants. Ultimately, we’re looking for well-rounded people with an understanding that if the right support and adjustments are made, barriers can be removed to enable learning and access to life. You may already have experience of supporting young people, but equally it may be that you have strengths and experience in a particular sector of work that would really add value for the learner’s work skills.
A large proportion of our learners have Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) - a document which sets out the education, healthcare, and social care needs of learners for whom extra support is needed. All learners at NMT have varying levels and areas of need such as: autism, ADHD, anxiety, attachment disorder, dyslexia, experience of trauma, social emotional needs, and learning difficulties amongst others. Come and work with one of our teams who dedicate themselves to supporting young people in energising, inclusive and caring work environments.
Key Responsibilities
· Support tutors meeting outcomes on EHCPs
· Run small 1:1 or group interventions named on the EHCP.
· Deescalate situations as they arise.
· Support tutors to adjust lesson activities for learners.
· Support learners with their social and emotional development
· Offer day to day support to learner’s mental health and wellbeing.
· Working in accordance with and full understanding of NMT’s safeguarding protocols and procedures
· Encourage and reinforce to the young people the links between regular attendance, participation, effort, and positive outcomes.
· Support tutors by helping learners on a one-to-one basis with their learning programme which may also include Maths, English and Employability Skills
· Work as part of a team to organise practical life skills activities that enable the young people to strengthen their independence and progress to employment and/or further training.
· Work as part of a team to generate creative ideas for how you or other team members can support young people that can be difficult to engage.
· Support with administrative duties, including, but not limited to, class profiles, psychometrics, ILP set up, general marking of construction and F.S., finding students levels on LRS/ULN, among others.
About us:
New Meaning Training is an alternative education provision helping young people to find their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living. Around 250 young people will join one of our programmes this year, many having been referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units and Special Education Needs settings. We have a mix of six learning programmes (not all offered at all locations); Construction Skills, Work & Study, Sports & Public Services, PALS, Boost and Achieve. All our programmes incorporate functional skills qualifications (Maths and English). Since New Meaning Training opened its first centre in High Wycombe in 2015, the organisation is now supporting young people across Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire.
You will have:
· Ability to build a rapport with young people from diverse backgrounds that can inspire and motivate.
· A teamworking and proactive attitude.
· Good organisational skills and the ability to work flexibly.
· The desire to help learners to achieve their goals with empathy and understanding for young people in all circumstances.
· Professionalism always – when working with learners, parents, and external parties
· A good understanding of current social issues would be an advantage (e.g., County Lines and the impact of COVID on young people and their mental health).
· Either have an existing knowledge of learning styles and abilities or a willingness to learn
· A creative flare for tailoring engaging activities that support learners towards their individual goals would be an advantage.
· Current DBS.
